Elliotte Friedman: “Well, I think the most important thing is that I understand that Andersson indicated on Sunday that he would not sign an extension with anyone at this time. So Boston was eliminated. I don’t think they were willing to pay what it was going to cost them to get this deal done without the guarantee of an extension.”
And I don’t know exactly what happened over the last few days, but yesterday while I was working on this, everyone seemed to have the idea that Andersson might sign with the Bruins. But I think the Bruins got to a point where they had to know one way or another: Do we do this or do we move on? And today I think the information was released that he wouldn’t sign an extension. And once that happened, the pendulum swung to the Golden Knights.

You know, Pat, you’re in Calgary. The Golden Knights tried to get him around the draft last year. They liked him a lot. I think he really liked the idea of possibly playing for them. And Vegas, as I said, was always in a position where in the last few days they were willing to do this with no guarantee of an extension because they thought they could sign him.
And I think if you look at the other teams that may have been involved in this, and I think Boston was, I think Dallas was, I think Toronto was, I guess there were a few others that I’m not really aware of.
But I think when the expansion, some of it, went away, I think Vegas was in a really good place. I don’t know what the Stars ended up doing. I think they would have done it even without the guarantee of renewal. But looking at this offering, I just don’t know that I’ve seen Dallas beat.
Flames GM Craig Conroy on Flames Talk: “I was told this morning that he wouldn’t be signing with any team, so any deals I did would be rentals… Some teams were open to the idea of bringing him in, showing him what the city was like and then making a decision. But in the end, I felt like Vegas had the best offer on the table.”

As much as the Bruins wanted him, the extension was a must. Despite the Bruins being the clubhouse leader, the Vegas Golden Knights had the advantage because they were willing to let him go without an extension because GM Kelly McCrimmon knew he could sign him like he did with Noah Hanifin.
