Flames need to sign Abram Wiebe, and is Whitecloud in play?

Elliotte Friedman joined Pat Steinberg, Wes Gilbertson and Logan Gordon on Sportsnet 960 The Fan on Flames Talk and was asked what’s next for the Calgary Flames with Rasmus Andersson being traded.

Pat Steinberg: “From your point of view, does this mean anything other than just the trade. From a Flames point of view, does this mean future decisions in the coming weeks and months leading up to the Calgary deadline?”

Elliotte Friedman: “Well, I think from this, number one, the defenseman from North Dakota, Wiebe or Wiebe (pronunciation), I admit, I’m not 100% sure how to pronounce it. He’s not signed at this point, so you have to figure out what you’re doing there. I, so figure out if you can sign him.”

Calgary, I think, obviously has two guys in North Dakota. So they would have seen a lot of this child. So someone pointed it out to me, Pat, they’re looking at Flames prospects in North Dakota. So this is someone they would have looked at quite a bit. And then the second thing with (Zach) Whitecloud, and honestly, I haven’t talked to Conroy yet. I do know that a young defender was something they wanted as part of this.

But can they consider Whitecloud theirs? Will they keep him? Or is he someone they’re looking at to see what the market is for him? I think we all know by now that Craig wants to see what’s out there and change their group a little bit. But I heard that the return must be meaningful. I think when you look at this you’ll understand why Calgary did it.

I have no doubt his phone will continue to ring. I have no doubt there will be calls: ‘Okay, now that you’ve done this, how about a (Blake) Coleman? What do you think about (Nazem) Kadri? Where are we here?’

But the first thing I look at in the deal is: can they sign the defenseman from North Dakota, and what are their long-term plans for Whitecloud?
