NHL isn’t panicking about the Olympic rink yet, but it’s getting close
Elliotte Friedman joined Scott Laughlin and Gord Stellick on Sirius XM NHL Network Radio on Wednesday and was asked about the Olympic hockey rink and the NHL side’s concerns about it not being completed yet.

Scott Laughlin: The big news yesterday, I think, is that Friedge is the fact that the NHL, apparently, and you can dig into this a little further, is actually sending a delegation while they’re in Europe anyway, to bring the Global Series to the arena in Italy. Right now, Friedge is concerned about whether or not it will be up and running in time for February.

Elliotte Friedman: “I think what’s going on here, Scott, is that they’ve gotten some troubling reports, and they want to send some people down there to make sure. And someone from the Players Association will be going there, as was told to me last night (Tuesday), so I just heard that.
They get updates all the time, and this is something they have no control over. And I just think they want to see it before they actually comment on it. But yeah, I got the feeling yesterday (Tuesday) that it was a bit like what exactly is going on here. Although, as I wrote, they were quite concerned when I asked a few different people, and the driest answer I got was, “We’ll see when they get there.”
So I think in about a week or so we’ll have a better idea of where we stand. The matches in Sweden are 14th and 16th. So I think they’ll go there straight away. I reminded (Gary) Bettman of this once that they were still building Sochi when we showed up there in 2014, so it’s not unusual.
But he made a point of saying that while that’s true, the rink was built well in advance. They held the World Under-18s ten months before the Olympics in 2014 and have yet to host an event. And when they were supposed to be arrested in December, this was pushed back to January.

Once again, as he has stated, the NHL and its players are guests of the Olympic Games. However, the fact is that they send people to check it the progress of a rink that is not completed raises alarm bells why, and could this move the NHL’s hand?
