Jets losing streak now at 10 games (0-6-4) following a 4-3 overtime loss to the Golden Knights

The Jets once again managed to end their long losing streak on Saturday night, losing 4-2 to the Ottawa Senators. Tonight the Jets played their first of five straight home games. Canada Life Center played host to tonight’s game as the Jets once again attempted to climb out of the bottom of the NHL league table. The now 15-21-4 Jets took on the 17-11-12 Golden Knights, with both teams struggling mightily in their last 10 games.

There were a few minor changes to the Jets lineup tonight. Gabriel Vilardi moved to line 2 and played alongside Jonathan Toews and Cole Perfetti. Alex Iafallo was on line 1, Morgan Barron remained on line 3 and Vladislav Namestnikov remained on line 4. Logan Stanley was suspended for tonight’s game after a hard hit on Senators forward Brady Tkachuk. The Jets’ third duo tonight was Haydn Fleury and Luke Schenn, but a scary-looking injury in the first period left Fleury crashing into the boards and forced to leave the Jets with five defensemen for most of the night.

Connor Hellebuyck got another start in goal, with Hellebuyck continuing to get plenty of starts since returning from injury. The Jets lineup remains fully healthy and injury-free. Hellebuyck came into tonight’s game with a 9-11-3 record, a 2.58 GAA and a solid .905 SV%. Despite not having many shots on goal, the Jets led 2-0 late in the second period. At the final horn, the Jets were losers in overtime, marking their 10th straight loss.

1st Period

Tonight’s game started with Toews receiving a tripping penalty after just 16 seconds. The Golden Knights’ early power play opportunity was denied as the Jets gained early momentum. The Jets would use that momentum shortly after, as Cole Perfetti scored his third goal of the season with a backhand shot in front after being set up from close range by Toews and Josh Morrissey.

It hasn’t been often that the Jets have opened the scoring lately, so this goal gave the fans (and the team) something to raise their energy in the building. A few minutes later, Haydn Fleury fell hard and crashed into the boards after a hit from behind the net. Fleury didn’t move for a while and he was forced to be stretchered off the ice. The Jets provided the next update after the 1st period.

Winnipeg Jets defenseman Haydn Fleury was taken to hospital by ambulance. He was fully alert and moving his limbs upon departure. The team will provide more information as we have it.

A few minutes later, Adam Lowry dropped the gloves to Keegan Kolesar, who hit Fleury, and Lowry got a quick win in this scrap. The final 7 minutes of the first period passed without any goals or penalties as the Jets took a 1-0 lead into the second period. The Golden Knights had the slight shots on goal advantage with a total of 6 to 5 after 20 minutes of play.

2nd Period

The second period was low mid frame for most of the 20 minutes. Mark Stone took a cutting penalty at 5:31, giving the Jets their first power play of the evening. Neither team had many shots on goal through 40 minutes, and neither did the Jets’ two-minute lead.

About 5 minutes into the penalty, Luke Schenn scored his first (yes, first) goal as a Winnipeg Jet. Tonight was also Luke Schenn’s 1,100th NHL game, so it was a “double milestone” goal for the veteran defenseman. Adam Lowry and Gabriel Vilardi found Schenn at the blue line, and Schenn fired a timely wrist shot that went through a screened Carter Hart to give the Jets a 2-0 lead.

The rest of the second period was mostly uneventful before Dylan Samberg took a high-stick penalty with 1:03 remaining. The Golden Knights were ready to start the power play after the faceoff, and 12 seconds later Mark Stone scored his 13th goal of the season. Mitch Marner passed it off to Pavel Dorofeyev, and his shot found Stone in front after deflecting off Schenn, leading to an easy “tap-in” for Stone.

Mark Stone scores on the power play to make it a 2-1 game.

The Golden Knights outscored the Jets 8-4 in the second period, but the Jets remained ahead 2-1. Shots on goal after the second were just 14-9 for the Golden Knights, so you knew both teams were looking to get more pucks on net in the final 20 minutes.

3rd Period

The third period was all Vegas for the first 10 minutes, with the Jets outscored 9-0. A few minutes before the half of the third inning, the Golden Knights tied the score at 2. Tomas Hertl found Noah Hanifin in the slot and his shot was stopped by Hellebuyck. Hanifin collected the rebound and found Brett Howden nearby, hitting one past Hellebuyck to tie the game.

Brett Howden makes it a 2-2 game in the 3rd period.

Two minutes later, after the Jets finally got their first shot on goal in the third, Zach Whitecloud took a high-stick penalty on Tanner Pearson. The Jets got a well-timed 2nd power play of the night, but it was stopped for a minute after Josh Morrissey took a hooking penalty. Teams traded possession during the 4 vs. 4, and this match remained tied at 2 with 6 minutes to go.

With still only 12 shots on goal in the match, the Jets took the lead with 5 minutes left. Gabriel Vilardi put Kyle Connor in the best shooting position and his wrist shot snuck past Hart to give the Jets a late 3-2 lead.

Even though there weren’t many shots on goal, things looked good for the Jets. Unfortunately, Reilly Smith scored his sixth goal of the season in this game a minute later at 3. Ben Hutton fired the puck at the net, and Brandon Saad inadvertently blocked it, before Smith picked up the puck on the rebound and put it in the back of the net before Hellebuyck could get over.

This game needed overtime as the Golden Knights defeated the Jets by a combined score of 26-15, but both teams found the back of the net three times. The Jets had another chance to end the losing streak during overtime.

Overtime

The Jets opened the overtime with a solid chance from Morgan Barron, but as the extra frame progressed it was the Golden Knights who had the slight advantage in chances. The Jets had a couple more big chances with just over a minute left, but Carter Hart closed the door to prevent the Jets’ winner. With 50 seconds left, Dylan Samberg took a tripping penalty, giving the Golden Knights a late overtime opportunity to win this game before a shootout.

Hellebuyck stood tall in the net to start this extra period, but after a reset and setup, Tomas Hertl tapped the puck after a point shot from Marner. The puck trickled over the line and with just over 12 seconds left, the Golden Knights won the game 4-3. The last shots on goal were 31-20 for the Golden Knights, and now the Jets are winless in their last ten games, with a record of 0-6-4.
