Emi Buendia found the winning goal in the 95th minute of the match at Villa Park when he lifted the ball past David Raya after a scramble on goal.
The Villans started the match strongly when Matty Cash opened the scoring with a brilliant finish after half an hour.
Arsenal came out of the break with purpose and their pressure paid off in the 52nd minute when Leandro Trossard leveled matters. But the Gunners were left to rue a number of missed chances as Buendia emerged late on with a decisive goal.
“Unbelievable,” the Argentinian playmaker told TNT Sports after the whistle. “We have shown some character in recent weeks, coming back from being behind in games.
“Incredible character and fight against the team top. We fight until the last minute, the last second.”
Cash added: “We knew it was going to be a very demanding game, but I think we were fantastic. The crowd here really helped us. Right at the end it was the craziest I’ve ever been!”
Aston Villa believes ‘anything’ is possible after Arsenal’s late win
The victory moves Villa to second place in the Premier League and reduces the gap with Arsenal to just three points. Talk of a title push will only increase as the Midlands team continues to display excellent form.
Asked what Villa can achieve this season, Cash said: “Everything! We have to take it one game at a time and keep working hard. We are doing well at the moment but we know it’s not even Christmas yet.”
