Arteta urges Arsenal to go again after ‘painful’ title blow

Mikel Arteta has urged his Arsenal team to bounce back after a dramatic 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa late on Saturday.

Emi Buendia delivered the decisive blow deep into injury time of a highly entertaining draw at Villa Park after Leandro Trossard canceled out Matty Cash’s opener.

The Villans have cut the gap to Arsenal to just three points as they move up to second in the Premier League after 15 games.

Arteta urges Arsenal to ‘go again’ after ‘painful’ title blow

“The way it happened at the end, very difficult to process,” Arteta told TNT Sports after the whistle.

“We had moments in the first half. They had the best chance, but I think it was a foul on Riccy [Riccardo Calafiori] when [Ollie] Watkins continues.

“After that we started to control the game and we had some good situations. But you are always on the edge, especially if you don’t manage the ball well when you get it back. We didn’t do that well in the first half.”

“In the second half we started very well. We scored the goal, we were dominant. But then we had periods where the same problem occurred.”

“We didn’t have the dominance, we allowed open spaces. We gave away two balls that could have cost us the game before the actual goal.”

“And then we don’t score the chance like Declan [Rice] passes the ball to Noni [Madueke] and Viktor [Gyokeres]. We don’t score, goal kick long, second ball, clearing the ball, an individual action, a lot of chaos in the penalty area and in the end you lose it. So it is painful.”

Arteta added: “We have to focus on ourselves and on certain standards that we have not achieved today, especially individually.

“The effort was definitely there. We have to use that pain to go again. That’s football.”

“The consistency we have shown with everything that has happened to us is incredible.”
