School of the Year is just one of 12 categories in the Cloudathlete Pride of Table Tennis Awards and nominations are currently open.
Many people are first introduced to table tennis at school, and perhaps they also take their first steps in competition in that environment. Schools therefore play a crucial role in the table tennis landscape.
Last year’s School of the Year award was shared between St Just Primary School in Cornwall and Patcham High School in Brighton.
St Just Primary, which is seven miles from Land’s End, regularly offers table tennis for its pupils.
All 60 Years 5 and 6 students received weekly coaching at six tables in four groups of 15. The children enjoy their sessions and look forward to them every week. The school also has tables on the playground.
About 20 children, selected for abilities, special circumstances and attitudes, then practiced in the After-School Club on Friday. The special circumstances include helping Ukrainian children and combating social disadvantage.
There is another level, because the most talented can then train on Monday evenings at the Cape Cornwall Table Tennis Club.
The under 11 girls team played in the South West Area Schools Team event in Plymouth in January. All of these girls have played in West Cornwall League events and former pupils now play for the club.
The school fully supports table tennis, allows free use of the hall, supports all communication with parents and finances travel.
Every child succeeds in playing the game at a level that creates real fun. Even more striking is the number of girls who regularly play table tennis, often competitively, and at a good level.
David May, who coaches at the school, said: “This award has really contributed to the further development of table tennis at the school and at Cape TTC.
“Getting TV coverage on BBC South West has added hugely to the impact of winning this award. I have lived in the beautiful community of St Just for over 30 years but suddenly I was inundated with positive comments about what we were achieving.
“Now it seems that almost everyone in a town of 5,000 knows us. Everywhere I went there were congratulations.
“More importantly, the kids we now coach every week are not only clamoring to play more often, but also to get better at the sport, to join the club and play competitively.”
If you know of schools that deserve recognition, please nominate them before January 12.
There are 11 other categories in the Cloudathlete Pride of Table Tennis Awards, including officials, clubs, leagues, coaches and more, including Volunteer of the Year and Young Volunteer of the Year awards.
