This week, the WTT meeting series visited Buenos Aires, and the best player of this hemisphere did not waste the chance to perform well in South America. Admittedly, there is almost three thousand miles between the Hugo Calderano house in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the tournament location in Argentina – but for a player who lived and participates in large events that mainly take place in Asia, it must be fun to be “only” a three -hour flight.

Calderano was the clear favorite that entered the tournament, and he dominated the draw to win five games and only to lose 2 matches in total. He took the first prize and he took it on dominant fashion – but the biggest story of the event was perhaps his opponent in the last, Mizuki Oikawa. Oikawa had a great tournament and as World No. 106 his run included three solid disruptions. Oikawa had to set up a comeback to beat the Florian Bourrassaud qualifying match 3-2 in the opening round. Then he fell behind the second seed Oh Jungsung 0-2 before he won three to get the upset of the tournament. And he was not ready-a 3-1 upset victory over Andre Bertelsmeier and an upset victory over Manav Thakkar launched him in the final. He was surpassed against Calderano but succeeded in winning a match when Calderano took the title 4-1.

The top seed also won the ladies singles event when Miwa Harimoto Cheng I-Ching defeated 4-2 in the final. The Japanese team of Hamada and Kobayashi won Herendubbel. Miwa Harimoto won her second event by working together with Satsuki Odo to win women’s dubbles. And not to be surpassed, Hugo Calderano won his second event by working with Bruna Takahashi to win mixed doubles.
