Why getting new clubs doesn’t end with trying them on | Fully equipped

So you’ve just gotten fit for new golf clubs, but the process doesn’t really end there.

Yes, you order those golf clubs, but there is more to it.

Johnny Wunder just experienced this first-hand after getting fit Vokey’s new SM11 wedges by Tour representative Aaron Dill.

Wunder returned to the Titleist Performance Institute after his first fitting with Dill to get his new wedges and adjust them to get the correct gap.

On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, Wunder and Morrow talked about how the fitting experience doesn’t really end with fitting and how you need to be able to go back to the fitter to make sure everything is adjusted like Wunder did.

Titleist Vokey SM11 Tour Chrome Wedge

The new SM11 wedges from Titleist Vokey Design feature a new, precise CG position with each grind in a loft, meaning every wedge will now perform the same way with the same shot.

“I would say I’m probably 65, 70 percent confident that you don’t have to change anything in the setup of those wedges, like whether it’s adjusting the lofts and groins or whatever,” Morrow said. “And then you come out of that gap session and you’re like, dude, that was great. Like you had such a good time. I felt like I got every bit of confidence I have out of that set of wedges. And I think that actually might be a bigger point to bring up as well – something we haven’t talked about much yet – is that there are phases to club fitting.”

As Morrow noted, it’s critical to work with your installer once you have the clubs; you have to make sure everything is as it should be.

“When you come up with a good club fitter, you should first try to find a club fitter that you trust to continue visiting,” Morrow added. “Whether once a year, every few years, once every six months, whatever it is, finding a fitter who you trust with your game is hugely important because you can do things like revisit them and say, ‘Hey, we’ve gotten fit for this, but can you rule them out for me now so I still know you’re okay with what I’m playing?’”

Not only will this ensure that what your installer specified to you is what you have, but getting that extra bit of validation will only build confidence. All good installers would like to do this because it builds trust between you, the customer, and them, which can lead to a better relationship in the long run.
