T20 World Cup: It’s about adapting, says England’s Tom Banton on new No.4 role

England batsman Tom Banton says he is enjoying his new role at No.4, adding that he is now “older” and “more mature” and understands his game better after leading the team to a crucial win over Scotland in the T20 World Cup.

Banton produced a calm unbeaten 63 to anchor a tricky chase and seal a nail-biting five-wicket win, keeping England’s Super Eights hopes alive.

“I think being a little bit, obviously older, more mature, has understood my game better,” he said of what he did differently against Scotland on Saturday.

“When I came on the scene, I remember being on the verge of getting into the Somerset second team at the start of that summer.

“Six months later I was playing for England and traveling all over the world, which was great, but it made me understand it more.

“I’ve kind of, I don’t know, just grown. I’ve learned a lot about myself. Not even anything to do with cricket,” he said.

Banton was mainly an opener and returned to the England squad for the first time as a finisher.

He then missed Ben Duckett before replacing him again during the pre-World Cup tour of Sri Lanka.

After coming out cheaply for 2 against Nepal and 2 against West Indies, there was immense pressure, with many questioning the batting order.

England were 13/2 when Banton came under immense pressure, but he settled and later took the lead in a 66-run partnership with Jacob Bethell.

When batting at number 4, Banton said: “It’s different, I’m not going to lie… You probably come in against the spin or towards the end of the power play, depending on how we go.

“The biggest one is adapting to the scenario or the wicket. I found Wankhede a bit difficult. Today I feel it was a pretty good wicket.” He emphasized that adaptability has become a key word in the England dressing room.

“It’s just reading the game and adjusting, that’s the biggest word in our locker room right now,” he said.

“On a flat wicket we are one of the best teams in the world but if we want to win the World Cup, especially when we go to Sri Lanka, you just have to adapt.

“Sometimes it’s just about winning and winning ugly.
