Renovation TV is everywhere….so why is it on ABC?

With so many renovation shows on ABC in recent years, you might think it’s vying to become a lifestyle channel. They have become the backbone of ABC’s Thursday programming.
But there are also plenty of renovation shows on other networks. While there are elements that highlight Australian history and communities, is there also an overabundance of such programming?
According to the ABC Charter, the network is required to “broadcast programs that contribute to a sense of national identity and that inform, entertain and reflect the cultural diversity of the Australian community.”
“Major design transformations is currently on the air and doing extremely well for us,” said ABC Director of Screen Jennifer Collins.
“It was an original format created specifically in Australia. It’s the only area where at the moment Major design transformations consists. I think it can showcase everyday Australians across the country… so it definitely ticks the regional box.
“Restoration Australia tells more about the history. Not only are you looking at a really important restoration over a period of time, often years, but you are also telling the history of that church or that building, whatever it may be. So I think Restoration Australia is definitely in the right corner of public broadcasting, because it can tell both a cultural story and a contemporary restoration story in a very entertaining way.
“Grand designs is a public service show in Great Britain. It’s on Channel Four in the UK.
“That said, they are longitudinal documentaries. We probably wouldn’t choose a renovation show where the turnaround is quick and there are no layered stories.
“But they are really popular with our audience.”
