Several factors contributed to the team’s eventual sale, with Peter O’Malley himself revealing that the city’s rejection of his plans to build a football stadium played a major role in his decision.
“I can’t deny that was a factor,” Peter O’Malley said a few months after he announced his decision. “I have to tell you that I was extremely disappointed when we were asked to shelve our ideas.”
The Dodgers were also the biggest asset of the O’Malley family and the former owner of the Dodgers said player salaries had become “too high for a baseball-only business to succeed.”
How long did the O’Malley’s own the Dodgers?
Walter O’Malley became a part-time owner of the Dodgers in 1948 before taking full control of the team’s run from 1950. He owned the team until his death in 1979, passing ownership to Peter O’Malley.
Peter continued the family business for almost twenty years before eventually selling the team to Fox Entertainment Group.
What have the Dodgers accomplished under the O’Malley family?
The Dodgers enjoyed some of their most prosperous periods under the O’Malleys, winning six World Series championships during their 50-year reign. The first of their six came while the team was still in Brooklyn in 1955, when they defeated the New York Yankees in seven games.
Three years later, in 1958, they moved to Los Angeles.
A period of dominance followed the Dodgers’ move to Los Angeles, where they won three more World Series between 1959 and 1965. Peter O’Malley also won a number of World Series titles in 1981 and 1988.
Who owns the Dodgers now?
Ownership of the Dodgers has changed hands several times since O’Malley sold the team’s run in 1998, with Guggenheim Baseball Management currently owning the team. The Dodgers have continued their success after a dry spell under previous ownership, and look to continue dominating the MLB as long as they remain approx.
