‘Whatever happens’ – Trent’s message to Liverpool fans will only make Anfield’s response louder

Some might say he is trying to make peace, but Trent Alexander-Arnold’s final words ahead of his return to Anfield have only added fuel to the fire.

Speak with Amazon Prime Video Sports Before Tuesday night’s Champions League match against Real Madrid, the 27-year-old emphasized his “feelings won’t change” towards Liverpool – however he is received.

‘Whatever happens, my feelings towards Liverpool will not change’ he said. “I have memories there that will last a lifetime and no matter how I am received, that will not change.”

For us, that sentence says everything and nothing at the same time.

The right-back may still say he loves the club, but actions speak louder than words.

Expiring his contract to leave cheaply, while he already spoke fluent Spanish months before his departure, told its own story.

From local hero to enemy at Anfield

This is not a normal return. He is a former vice-captain, a Scouser, walking back into the ground he once dreamed of leading for life – now dressed in the white of Real Madrid.

He claims so “Always remain a fan of the club”he will “Never Celebrate” when he scores, and that’s his “Love” remains for Liverpool.

But that doesn’t change how it ended. In his final weeks, there were posters questioning his loyalty around Anfield, and we all remember why.

Steven Gerrard once admitted that Madrid asked him to force his way out to facilitate a deal. Gerard said no. Trent said yes.

That’s the difference between a legend and someone who chose themselves over what their club and their city should be.

Tuesday night will not be about hate. It will be about pain. The booing will not come from bitterness, but from heartbreak. Because if he really was one of us, he would never have left in the first place.
