India’s vice-captain Shreyas Iyer provided a moment of brilliance mixed with heartbreak during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), as he made a sensational running catch to dismiss Alex Carey but suffered an injury. The breathtaking moment, dubbed Iyer’s ‘Superman catch’, quickly went viral on social media, drawing widespread praise for his athleticism and bravery.

Shreyas Iyer’s flying effort stuns the Sydney crowd

The incredible incident took place in the 34th over of the Australian innings. Harshit Rana, who bowled a long delivery outside off stump, forced Carey into an aerial cut towards the back point area. Iyer, fielding from the back point, reacted in the blink of an eye, turning and sprinting for almost 20 meters before making a full dive just outside the 30-metre circle. With remarkable timing, he managed to keep the ball inches above the ground, completing one of the most memorable catches of the series.

The Sydney crowd rose to its feet as Iyer completed the catch as he fell to the ground. Carey’s dismissal for 24 off 37 balls proved crucial as it broke a developing partnership with Matt Renshaw, who anchored Australia’s middle order.

A painful landing leaves Shreyas Iyer feeling uncomfortable

However, genius came at a painful price. After completing the catch, Ijer landed awkwardly on his left side, his elbow hitting his ribcage and his hip taking the brunt of the fall. He immediately grimaced in pain and lay motionless for several seconds before the Indian physio and teammates came to his rescue.

During the subsequent drinks break, Iyer was helped off the field while holding his left hip and abdominal area. Fox Sports later reported that the injury appeared to be centered around his left hip and abdominal area, although at the time of writing, the BCCI did not provide any update on his condition or availability to bat in India’s innings.

India restricts 236 for Australia

India’s bowling attack put up an impressive performance in the crucial final overs of the match, bowling Australia out for just 236 in 46.4 overs. This clinical display in the death overs completely extinguished the momentum built up by the Australian top and middle order.

The star of the show was young fast bowler Harshit Rana, who led the demolition job with a brilliant spell and picked up four important wickets. His haul included Josh Hazlewood’s scalp for a duck, underscoring the sudden collapse of the lower order.

Picking up wickets regularly towards the end of the innings, the Indian bowlers successfully navigated a difficult delivery and provided the batsmen with a very attainable target of 237. Having already lost the first two matches of the series, this total provides a solid platform for the Men in Blue to get into the hunt and secure a crucial consolation win to avoid a series whitewash.
