After starting the season with an unbeaten run of 22 games during the second Tier ITF tour, Mboko has shown in the past two weeks that she can mix it with the elite-die Grand Slam winners beat Coco Gauff, Sofia Kenin, Elena Rybakina and Osaka.

It is validation of hard work from the age of three, and for parents who ended up in a completely different United States in 1999 – one that comforted political unrest in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

But it is in Toronto where Mboko – who was born in Charlotte in the US – was inspired to play tennis.

“I remember that I went there as a child and saw all the great players play,” Mboko told the Women’s Tennis Association.

‘We watched a lot of Serena and Venus [Williams]And that is where I have taken a lot of inspiration, because Serena was literally the greatest of all time. I used to see what the professionals are and I used to be so much awe for them. And now I see them just next to me. “

Mboko’s coach Nathalie Tauziat – a former world number three and Wimbledon -finalist in 1998 – supervised the remarkable form of Mboko after she had previously led her in the Junior Rangen.

“I think what is important for her is not to panic when something happens. I remember that I always told me at the beginning of the year:” Oh, you’re so calm during the competition, “said Tauziat.

“The US Open is the goal – who knows, maybe she can do something good? Here we will match match and we hope for no injury.”
