Jannik Sinner was forced to withdraw from his third round match at the Shanghai Masters against Tallon Giekspoor, the 27th seed, after he suffered from cramps in moist circumstances while he chased the Dutchman 6-7 (3), 7-5, 3-2.

In the last weeks of a long, difficult season for everyone, the Shanghai circumstances were serious last week, especially on Sunday when players tried to compete in 90% humidity. Many struggled poorly.

Planning in the night session offered little comfort for Sinner, the World No 2, which was dragged in a third set by a removing Griesesps. Towards the third set, the Sinner had physically deteriorated, visibly cramp and limited badly before he had no choice but to retire.

“This is definitely not the way you want to win,” said Griekspoor. “Brutal circumstances here in Shanghai all week. I thought we were still lucky to play without sun in the evening, but two hours, 36 minutes on the clock, in the middle of the third set. Sorry for him, I wish him a quick recovery.”

Carlos Alcaraz, de wereld nr. 1, trok zich terug uit Shanghai vĂ³Ă³r het toernooi vanwege de enkelblessure die hij aan het begin van zijn titel eind vorige maand in Tokio in Tokyo liep, wat betekent dat Sinner’s pensionering een geweldige kans biedt voor de rest van het veld, inclusief Novak Djokovic, die in de ronde van 16 met een 4-6, 7-5, 6-5, 6-5, 6-5, 6-3, 6-5, 6-5, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3, 6-5, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3, is 6-5, 6-5, 6-5, 6-5, 6-5, 6-5, 6-5, 6-5, is the 6-5, 6-3 victory of Yannick Hanfoning.

Elsewhere, Amanda Anisimova continued to put together an incredible breakthrough season when she followed her success during the Grand Slam tournaments by winning the biggest title of her career with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 victory over Linda Noskova in Beijing.

The progress of the American in the past nine days has been particularly satisfying that she underwent wisdom surgery on the day she flew to Beijing: “It has certainly been here for a few weeks,” she said. “I have the feeling that I have learned a lot about myself. I think I can take a lot of positives and consider it a lot of progress for me, simply finding out ways to start certain challenges and push myself in moments that I can’t go any further. I feel that I have learned in that sense that I am stronger. That is a huge win.”
