UPDATED Terriers blank Minutemen; Fifth Olympic Games for Poulin

6 minutes, 58 seconds Read

#19 Terriers opened the second half with a 1-0 win against UMass as the first star Jack Harvey‘s goal in the second period was the only goal of the match. The score belied BU’s dominance, especially in the first two periods when they held the Minutemen to 11 shots while creating numerous scoring opportunities of their own. Goalkeeper Mikhail Yegorov was the second star of the game, stopping all 18 shots he faced.

Coach Jay Parolfopointed out in his weekly media call that the Terriers would have to create second chances around the net and jump on rebounds if they scored on a 6-foot-4 goalie. Michael Hrabel. He allowed very few rebounds and Harvey’s goal came on one of them.

BU has now won its last three starts and six of its last seven to sit at 10-8-1.

After the match, a satisfied Pandolfo said “I think it was a very good, solid road game. We controlled it very well… we got better as the game went on. By playing thirteen forwards… we managed the ice time quite well. I think that will also help us with having three [games] at four [nights]which we are not used to.”

He continued, “I thought everyone contributed tonight. So it was great to see, it was a really good team effort. Big Mike, to come out of the break and win the first game back, get a shutout, I think that’ll give him confidence. But overall, I think as a team we stopped 18 shots. That’s pretty good on the road…”

“UMass is a team that usually sends a lot of pucks to the net, and I think we did a good job of getting into shot lanes and ultimately winning pucks well,” Pandolfo said.

Proclaimed newcomer Tynan Lawrence, WHO got a solo skate at the start of the team’s pre-game skate, made a strong impression.

The New Brunswick native, who took center stage on BU’s second line Cole Eiserman and fellow freshmen Ryder Ritchie on his wings he created two scoring opportunities with point passes in the first period. Eiserman sent the first in after a partial breakaway that was thwarted by Hrabel at the goalmouth. Eiserman found the second alone between the circles, but his stick broke on his one-shot attempt.

Lawrence would later see action on a revamped BU power play unit, taking Eiserman’s usual spot in the right circle while Eiserman moved to the bumper spot. Lawrence won his first three draws and finished with five of nine.

“I liked his effort,” Pandolfo told the media after the match. “I thought he made some nice plays, but he’s just getting better and better. You can just see what type of player he is, how smart he is, has a good stick, can make plays and see what’s going on out there.”

The fourth line of Jonathan Morello, Ben Merrill And Nick Roukounakis set the tone, cycling the puck behind the UMass goal line and pulling it back to retain possession. Roukounakis fired a shot against the post at 1:50 p.m.

Ritchie took an elbow penalty late in the opening period that would successfully kill BU, limiting UMass to one shot. On the same play as the penalty, Pandolfo challenged the no-call with a stick to Eiserman’s head, but the challenge was rejected.

Terriers defeated UMass seven games to four in the opening period, winning 13 of 15 ties, with Morello going a perfect five for five.

The only goal of the game came eight minutes into the second, with BU in the offensive zone. Sacha Boisvert sent an ice pass to Aiden Celebrini at the top of the right circle. The junior defender dragged himself past a defender to the goal and fired a shot through Hrabel’s pads. Harvey, standing just outside the blue paint, quickly put the rebound past the swerving goalkeeper for his sixth goal of the season.

A few minutes later, Yegorov kept BU ahead Owen Mehlenbacher
on a shot from just outside the crease. Then cross out Bo Cosman gave BU a man advantage that produced three A chances, but no goals.

Yegorov made two more big saves in the middle period, including another on a Minuteman who only came close.

The Terriers had two Grade A chances to double their lead before the period ended. On the first, Brandon Svoboda took a centering pass on the goalmouth but couldn’t get the puck past Hrabel. Then the Czech goalkeeper robbed Ritchie with a shot from 3 meters away.

Shots for the period were 13-7 BU.

Knowing that the Minutemen would push for an equalizer in the third period, the Terriers did well to limit their attempts mainly to long shots. However, a shot from Mehlenbacher’s center clattered onto iron. Even when UMass signed Hrabel for an extra attacker, BU forced their hosts to shoot from outside as time expired.

Pandolfo was pleased with the team’s efforts to close out the victory, noting: “As the season goes on, things get more and more exciting. You have to feel comfortable playing one-goal games. When you go into the third period with a 1-0 lead and [being able to] hang in there, I loved it.”

The final shots were 30-18 BU, with the Terriers holding a 27-14 lead at the faceoff point.

With the win, BU moved up three spots in the NPI, which replaced PairWise, to #20.

The teams complete home-and-home Saturday at Agganis Arena. The Puck Drop is at 6:00 PM

JIM MCKENZIE’S TERRIER TAKEAWAY

This game marked the debut of the critically acclaimed Tynan Lawrence. I thought he had a solid game overall. He didn’t stand out clearly and didn’t make any noticeable mistakes. Given his skill level as he assimilates himself into the BU game, I fully expect him to be a more impact player.

As has historically been the case for players who compete in the World Juniors, they usually come back as better players. My observation tonight was that Sasha Boumedienne continues to improve his play on both ends of the ice. He plays with more confidence and is now one of the Terriers’ best defenders.

Sloppy D-zone play has haunted BU at times this season; tonight was no exception. Mick Frechette continues to improve and Aiden Celebrini had a very solid night, but I didn’t think Charlie Trethewey played his best.

For his team to make the HE Championship and play in the NCAA Tournament, the overall play in the D-zone must improve and become more consistent. The talent is there, but the team needs to continue to improve and consistently defend tighter.
