Blake Coleman: What happens when a hockey trade isn’t just about hockey?

Blake Coleman: What happens when a hockey trade isn’t just about hockey?

Calgary Flames fans know this all too well: trade deadline season is in full swing. If you’ve been watching the team lately, you may notice that things feel a little strange. The games are important, but the rumors feel like they’re in charge.

And then there’s Blake Coleman, talking to the media after practice. One thing that’s nice about Coleman is that he just puts it out there. No pretense, no pretending – just being honest about how messy this whole process can be.

Coleman admitted he hears the rumors and they matter

Coleman didn’t try to dodge the question. He admitted that he knows what is being said about him. He hears the rumors. How could he not? But he also made it clear that this isn’t just about him anymore. He’s older now. He has children and a family. He has a life that doesn’t just pack up like a bag.

That’s the part that resonates with NHL players. Fans sometimes forget that these guys live in temporary homes, raise kids in towns where they might last three years or three months, and are constantly waiting for someone else to tell them where they’re going.

Coleman said it best: “I am a Flame until I am told I am not.” There is something honest and almost resigned in that. Not negative – just real.

Blake Coleman of the Calgary Flames knows he could be traded.

That said, Coleman loves the game and his teammates

And despite everything, he continues to show up, enjoying the game and the group he plays with. That’s the part that gets to you. Imagine your job: you get along with everyone, you feel comfortable, and then out of the blue your boss says, “Pack your bags, you’re out tonight.”

For players from teams outside the playoffs, this is the trade deadline. Fans talk about salary caps, draft picks, aging curves – all the armchair stuff. But guys like Coleman think about leaving school, moving trucks and new neighborhoods. They also wonder if they will see their children before bedtime.

Coleman is a professional NHL player, but he is also a father

This video really sticks because you hear Blake talking like a parent first, and a hockey player second. He’s just trying to do the right thing with his job and his family, stay in the moment and let the rest take care of itself. That’s something everyone can relate to: you can’t predict the future; all you can do is give your best today.
