Tyrell Malacia remains unsure about leaving Manchester United this winter.
The Dutchman was part of United’s so-called ‘bomb squad’ in the summer of 2025 and failed to secure a departure. Despite the interest, no deal was reached and he ultimately stayed put.
Initially, Malacia was isolated from his United teammates, forced to train alone or occasionally with the Under-21s.
Recalled to training
However, after consultation with the squad, then-coach Ruben Amorim, before his dismissal, recalled Malacia for first-team training.
Since then, the left back has regularly been part of the match selection, albeit eleven times as an unused substitute.
He would have enjoyed more minutes, but his only senior appearance this season was a brief three-minute cameo during United’s 1-0 win over Newcastle.
He has not featured for the first team since, although he did recently feature for the Under-21s, where he played 46 minutes and scored in a 4-1 win over Wolves.
Malacia seeks clarity
Although his opportunities under Amorim were limited, Malacia now hopes the change in management will offer him another chance to revive his fortunes at Old Trafford. According to The sun:
“Malacia is approaching the final five months of his contract and will seek clarity from new United head coach Michael Carrick before making a decision on his future.”
The outlet further reported:
“The 26-year-old left-back has attracted some interest during this month’s transfer window, but none of the options appeal to Malacia.”
It remains to be seen whether Carrick will give him a lifeline at United.
Unfortunately Malacia
It’s a cruel twist that never really ignited Malacia’s United career, despite the promise he showed when Erik ten Hag first signed. A long-term injury kept him sidelined and upon his return he struggled to right himself.
He was loaned to PSV Eindhoven in early 2025, but failed to regain his spark in the Dutch league.
He returned to Old Trafford last summer and now, six months later, a conversation with Carrick could determine where he plays the second half of this season.
