Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has explained the secret behind Casemiro’s stunning revival under Ruben Amorim.
Casemiro impresses vs. Brighton
Casemiro produced an exceptional performance on Saturday as United cruised to a 4-2 win over Brighton and Hove Albion at Old Trafford.
The Brazilian assisted the opener and scored the second of the match, helping United secure a third successive Premier League victory.
When he came off the field in the second half, Casemiro was treated to a thunderous standing ovation by the home crowd. After the final whistle, Ruben Amorim praised the experienced midfielder and described him as an example for the team. Amorim revealed that Casemiro was at one point firmly at the bottom of the pecking order, even behind Toby Collyer.
Casemiro has started seven of United’s nine Premier League games this season and looks set to be one of the first names on the team list.
Speaking of his Rio Ferdinand presents podcastFerdinand believed that Amorim’s tactical adjustment is responsible for Casemiro’s revival.
Ferdinand also launched a new attack on ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, who last year told Casemiro to ‘leave football before football left him’.
Ferdinand speaks out about Casemiro
Ferdinand said: “I think by looking at how the system has been adapted in its approach, you see the benefits in someone like Casemiro.”
“This isn’t a 20-match series so we’re not going to go too crazy, but the games we’ve seen where the form has improved [he has had an impact].”
“You don’t win five Champions Leagues without resilience, character and work ethic. Now he is the reference point for every player who is struggling at this football club.”
Ferdinand further explained: “He has had a great career, a career that has won the Champions League five times, because he was the glue, the person who tied the back line and the midfield together and plugged the gaps. He wasn’t asked to run everywhere or be a creator. He was the one who cleaned up and did all the dirty work and set up an area.”
“We saw this recently. We saw something like old Casemiro.”
The six-time Premier League winner continued: ‘It brings me back to what Jamie Carragher said about ‘leave the game.’ “I said at the time that I thought it was very disrespectful when you’re talking about a five-time Champions League winner who might be going through a changing approach to football at a time when he wasn’t looking good.”
“Players lose confidence, players lose form. But I think the call was too early and it was very disrespectful to someone who has achieved so much in the game.”
Casemiro and United are back in action on Saturday when they head to the City Ground to take on Nottingham Forest.
