Passport holders from 12 countries are now downright forbidden to enter the United States. They are: Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Republic of Congo, Equatorial -Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.
Seven more countries – Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela – are confronted with important but no complete restrictions for travel.
Section four of the travel ban comprises a clear exemption for sports stars traveling to those competitions – and other “large” sporting events.
It says: “Every athlete or member of an athletic team, including coaches, people who play a necessary support role, and direct family members, travel for the World Cup, Olympic Games or another large sporting event as determined by the State Secretary” can still travel to the US.
“Two hundred and six countries are preparing to come to the Games,” said Nicole Hoevtsz, an IOC vice president who is chairman of the LA28 coordination committee.
“The federal government has given us that guarantee … to ensure that these participants can enter the country … We are very convinced that this will be achieved.”
In addition to the Olympic and Paralympic Games of 2028 in Los Angeles, the US will also, together with the FIFA World Cup in 2026, next to Canada and Mexico.
