Toyota GR GT Supercar Teaser Video Confirms Name and Reveals Design Details

Hard to believe it’s been almost four years since Toyota took the covers off the GR GT3 concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon. Since then we’ve been waiting patiently to see if a road car would follow. Initial reports suggested the car would carry a Lexus badge, but Toyota set the record straight earlier this year when it announced the car would be sold under the Gazoo Racing banner.

Ahead of its world premiere next week, Toyota’s flagship performance car finally has a name: GR GT. Closer to the bottom of this page, a TV commercial that aired in Japan a few hours ago has been added, showing the upcoming model alongside its predecessors, the LFA and the 2000GT. The thunderous note of a V-10 follows the inline-six of the classic car before the newcomer plays what we think is V-8 music.

The video also provides a good opportunity to see the GR GT without camouflage. Toyota has lowered the brightness to hide the finer details, but there’s still enough light to show off the car’s wide haunches. In addition, the light signatures at the front and back appear to reflect the upcoming 2026 GR010 Le Mans hypercar.

While the video clearly shows the street-legal version, a GT3 endurance racer is also on the way. Toyota recently confirmed plans for a new V-8 engine, which will likely also be used by the company’s luxury division. A production version of the Lexus Sport Concept with that eight-cylinder mill seems plausible, and the V-8 is expected to filter into regular models as well.

The all-new combustion engine is believed to have two turbochargers and a displacement of 4.0 liters. However, Toyota hasn’t released any final details about the new V-8 and hasn’t said whether it will be a hybrid. As much as we’d love to see a manual transmission, that seems highly unlikely. However, we would like to be proven wrong.

How much will it cost? We bet it will easily be a six-figure car. We make this assumption based on Toyota’s efforts earlier this year to compare a prototype to the previous-generation AMG GT. While we expect it to significantly undercut the $375,000 LFA, prepare to make around $150,000 or perhaps more. After all, the outgoing Lexus RC F already sells for $100,000.

Due to its exorbitant price tag, the LFA was not exactly a commercial hit. As a result, Toyota and Lexus are likely to be more cautious in setting prices to avoid clashing with big names in this segment such as Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren.

The official premiere is scheduled for this Friday, December 5 (Japan time), so Americans can see the GR GT late Thursday, December 4. The online unveiling will be shortly followed by a public debut at the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon (9-11 January).
