Sources with knowledge of the matter said the slate of investments to be signed in the conclave also includes shipbuilding projects along the Cuddalore coast and South TN.
While one will come from a global shipping major, whose name business line could not confirm, shipbuilding division of shipping company Chowgule Group has also committed around ₹7,500 crore for a facility in South TN, sources said. Further, Chowgle Global is close to inking a deal to invest around ₹1,000 crore in Cuddalore district for a ship repair facility, they added. Once established, the projects can help boost the prospects of MSMEs in the related regions.
The investment commitments for the shipping industry come at a time when TN is formalizing a maritime and shipbuilding policy to encourage new shipyards and attract global companies. Tamil Nadu is focused on turning “its 1,000-kilometre coastline into a corridor with immense potential for the blue economy,” Industries Minister TRB Rajaa said recently.
Companies from aerospace, defense, IT and IT-enabled services will also be part of the conclave and sign agreements with the state. The event will also unveil the progress made by the state in the SIPCOT Melur project, the plans for a major industrial park in Melur district near Madurai.
While Madurai’s business ecosystem is known for its traditional MSME strengths in textiles and industrial goods, it is also becoming home to a growing number of IT companies – both national and global – who choose the city for its talent base. The city also produces entrepreneurial talent in agritech. Like the other TN Rising Conclaves, the Madurai event will also unveil investments signed for other districts.
