Three left-backs Derby County should keep an eye on in January as a new transfer priority emerges News: The72 – Football League News

Derby County will use the January transfer window to strengthen their ranks, and a new left-back could be at the top of the list.

Derby County will be among the Championship clubs looking at the January transfer window as an opportunity to bridge the gap to the play-offs. DCFC are one of many clubs who must feel there is a chance to break into the top six in a highly competitive season.

John Eustace received good support during the summer transfer window, but could also use some help next month. One area that will certainly receive attention is the left-back.

Owen Beck has had to undergo hamstring surgery and his loan is cancelled. That leaves only Callum Elder, who is out of contract in 2026, and Craig Forsyth, 36 in February, as options on the left.

That said, we’ve suggested three left-backs that Derby County should consider in January…

Harry Pickering – Blackburn Rovers

Eustace has not been afraid to sign former players, and one who is ready to be available is Harry Pickering. The reliable left back has been completely eliminated by Valerien Ismael and will leave Blackburn Rovers in the winter.

Although his best role is as a full-back, his well-rounded game means he can play both sides of the game. Pickering has a fine left foot and can make dangerous deliveries when allowed to move forward, but also has the defensive side of his game locked down.

The 26-year-old will likely be available on loan. He could be a smart short-term solution for DCFC.

Nias Hefti – FC Sion

Derby County have not hesitated to look for options abroad and that could make Nias Hefti an intriguing player to consider. Most of their wide threat and creativity comes from the right, with Joe Ward and Max Johnston as options.

However, Hefti’s efforts this season could make him someone worth keeping an eye on on the left.

Nias Hefti’s 2025/26 stats

The creative threat he has shown at a good level in Switzerland would give the Rams threat from both sides. Hefti, who is 26 years old and entering the final 18 months of his contract, could be a smart permanent signing for DCFC.

Dennis Cirkin – Sunderland

Last but not least there is Dennis Cirkin, who is working on getting fully fit again at Sunderland. Reinildo’s departure for AFCON means he is likely to get a point in the side, but if the starter returns at the end of the month he could be a target for Derby County.

Cirkin was a standout at Championship level last season, offering a real attacking threat from the left back. However, he is not favorite in the Premier League and a departure seems possible.

Cirkin may be too expensive to sign permanently, but he would be a brilliant loan addition for Eustace and co.
