Brighton 2 Newcastle 1 – Saturday 18 October 2025 3pm

Direct fan/writer response from some of our regular contributors to The Mag.

Nat Seaton:

‘Started the game well, but we stopped when Brighton took the upper hand.

A much better second half from us and a brilliant goal from Big Nick, unfortunately not enough to get anything out of the match.

Not at our best defensively today, but Pope couldn’t have done anything with either goal.

We created chances but couldn’t finish them.

We go on to Benfica and the Champions League and hopefully there will be a smile on our faces again.’

Billy Miller:

‘The first half was the worst I’ve seen us play in a while, but after the break we were much better.

I had the pleasure of watching this with the silent majority on the Amex.

I gave myself away when Woltemade scored and gave a ‘get in’, but the guy next to me turned out to be a Newcastle fan too.

Our midfield completely lost the battle today and all our wingers, except Barnes, offered nothing.

I’ll just put it down as one of our signature South Coast gigs.”

GTone:

“For people who didn’t see us in the 80s, this is what the season looked like.

Lost at home to the big teams with a gutsy performance and then lost to teams like the mighty Brighton.

The Champions League ruined football for me. It’s now all about that competition and the money that comes from it, rather than the actual competition we play in.

Last point. Why have a squad if it isn’t rotated from the start, rather than when we chase the match.

A boring gig on a boring day in a boring country, as they say in the Mr Men books.’

Matt Busby said…:

“Talk about not getting the greens.

When big Nick’s excellent film put us on level terms, I had the feeling that only one team would win.

That it was Brighton beggars belief, although the fact that Burn’s brilliant challenge on Wieffer fell so invitingly into the path of Danny Welbeck was par for the course on an afternoon when nothing pleased us.

Murphy made a big difference in the second half and should definitely start for Elanga.

There were other positive signs, including Eddie changing things earlier than he normally does, but big Dan Burn is not a left-back.

It could be much worse. The games are coming thick and fast. Next Benfica in the Champions League.’

Jamie Smith:

‘Completely frustrating because we still haven’t managed to break two tropes. A shocking record in this field and a baffling inability to live with Danny Welbeck.

The ten-minute performance until half-time was woeful, and it was the credit of Jacob Murphy whose introduction brought the attack to life.

Things are still not clicking well, focus on the cups for the coming weeks and we have to hope that this is the catalyst for an overall improvement in form.”

Tony Mallabar:

‘Back on the train to St. Pancras…eventually.

The last time I saw us win at Brighton, Mick Quinn got a hat-trick.

A bad first half from us, but a great second half.

Unfortunately, as much as I support us, we need more consistency in terms of results.”

David Punton:

‘Irate. A loser, because Danny Welbeck remains our unlikely seasonal tormentor.

We never do anything here. There’s almost something in the air. Our record is terrible.

Death, taxes and loss in Brighton! A draw here last season, as good as it can get.

A wonderful goal to put us on level terms.

An unashamed film by Woltemade.

Unfortunately, we can’t hold on and it’s another late goal against.

Almost ten PL matches in. You’d have to say the start to the season wasn’t great.

I swear, one day we will win at Brighton and Hove Albion.

For the time being, this is seen as enormous frustration for manager, player and fans.

“I hate to make excuses, but the precious momentum of the Forest victory seems to have been lost due to the international break.”
