Well, after a week of teaser videos previewing what we thought was finally going to be a production WRX STI, Subaru unveiled it in Japan instead. A different concept.
While this looks like a production-ready WRX STI sedan, complete with big wheels and good red accents, Subaru is calling it the WRX STI Sport# Prototype and hasn’t confirmed anything for production yet. We wish we were joking.
Details are sparse, but we do know that this prototype is powered by the same 2.4-liter boxer engine as in the current WRX. That unit makes 271 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque on the standard WRX, but we’d heap that this prototype has a little more oomph.
Subaru says the STI Sport # is mated to a six-speed manual transmission and naturally sends power to all four wheels. The company didn’t provide any further details, but it does say “Coming Soon” on its website. Fingers crossed.
Taking Motor1s: We really expected to see the new WRX STI in Tokyo today. Unfortunately, it’s just another prototype that gives a taste of what could perhaps become a production model. That said, this prototype appears closer to production than any other we’ve seen. Here’s hoping that this one Actually makes it production.
