The youngest captain Bethell of England ever to ‘go into Deep End’ against Ireland

Jacob Bethell is ready for England to “throw me in the deep” while he prepares to lead the side against Ireland for the first time on Wednesday, making him the youngest men’s captain in the country.

With Harry Brook, this Quickfire Three-Match Twenty20 series rested in Malahide, just north of Dublin, the 21-year-old steps in to continue his strong rise in the international cricket. Bethell made his debut in England last September and made an impression in his first against New Zealand at the end of the year. But to seal a regular place in the Red-Ball XI, he has become an automatic choice in the white ball teams of Brendon McCullum.

“Baz gave me a ring and said I would be a skipper,” Bethell said. “Not much has been said about why I was chosen for the role. I don’t know the exact thinking of those who are in charge. I think it might just be a bit of confidence and showing a bit of trust. It will be nice to see how I go under pressure, and I am sure the boys who have made the decision want to see that.

“I like it when things come at a rapid pace, it tends to get me in time to time. So I love those situations does not mean that they always work. But hopefully this will.”

Even with many experienced names in the team to see Ireland, Bethell’s Ascension is in line with the wilder impulses of management when it comes to selection. He will have to fall back on his earlier experience with leading England under 19 years.

“A very young one,” replied a smiling Bethell when he was asked what kind of captain he is. “The most important thing I looked for in captains I have had before is how they manage people. Not every tactical decision you make is work, but it manages the boys well, so that they feel that you support them. I have no pre -toted ideas about how I’m going to be.”

Bethell has found shape with the bat since he was announced as a captain last month, after he had hit his first professional century in the third ODI against South Africa less than fourteen days ago. “I didn’t play for a while and maybe lost a little rhythm, but felt that rhythm returned halfway through a hundred, so it’s great to be back.” He was not dragged into a detailed ash conversations: “My head was cut firmly on this series.”

Harry Tector and Paul Stirling “are the two most important threats with the bat” for Ireland, Bethell said. The hosts come under prepared and have not played a completely different story since June than England will be without the Whippy left pace of Josh Little, recovering from a rib injury. Nevertheless, the only completed T20 meeting between these two parties brought an Irish victory in Melbourne three years ago at the World Cup, a reminder that it might not all be flexible for Bethell in the coming days.
