Three weeks ago, Aaron Boone said: “Shortening the game has been a bit of a challenge for us in the last month and a half with some injuries we have had.”
That was the day that the Yankees David Bednar, Camilo Doval and Jake Bird added to a rough bullpen, with the idea that they would use a strong Bullpen crew to challenge a division title and in the late season.
However, the results of the pen since the trading deadline are disappointing – including in the loss of Thursday against Boston, when the battle of Doval continued while trying to adjust earlier in competitions.
Bednar has been largely solid since he was from Pittsburgh, but Doval is a brutal start in the Bronx after he had come from San Francisco, while Bird was so bad that he was quickly thrown overboard into a triple-a-a-wilkes-barre.
“We have been a bit inconsistent there,” said Boone Friday. “We just try to get those guys in the best possible roles. I have to do that better [and] We should do that better. I feel that we have the talent and the boys down there to still be very dynamic. “
They didn’t look out of the role.
Doval was shaky again on Thursday when he gave up the equal run as he threw the sixth inning – something that he did not often do with the Giants.
Boone said he spoke to Doval on Friday that he was ready to throw at different points of the game.
In combination with Devin Williams’ constant shaky since he was traded from Milwaukee during the low season, it was expected to be an enormous force for the Yankees has not developed into one.
Mark Leiter Jr. Has been inconsistent and Jonathan Loáisiga and Fernando Cruz have been hit by injuries.
Just like Boone, Bednar is convinced that the pen can still live up to his elevated goals.
“Absolutely,” said Bednar. “Without a doubt. You look at the group and the poor we have, they are incredibly talented guys who can get outs every moment during the game.”
Regarding their unwanted early returns, Bednar said: “You can go to baseball. There will always be adjustments when boys go to a new team. Things are happening and it is about how you go and bounce back.”
The Yankees have a little more than five weeks to get that done and Bone acknowledged that the new pitchers should find out what to do.
“Some guys are used to close games and fall into a number of different roles,” said Boone. “However, that is part of it. We are in the play -off position and fighting for a play -off place. We are now in the play. They are all important outs, or you get the fifth [inning]seventh or ninth. They all feel like high-delivery moments. You must ensure that you get that done. … This is a situation with a whole series. “
And the manager stuck that they would get it going before it’s too late.
“I do [believe that]”Said Boone.” We have to get there. We have to let everyone click, but I certainly feel that we have the pieces and talent there to do that. That’s my hope. I hope it comes together here at the right time and what we hope is baseball in October. “
