Detroit Lions GM Brad Holmes works to make NFL -Front offices more diverse and to reflect their players and communities.
Detroit Lions GM Brad Holmes uses his success to diversify NFL front offices and to better display players and the communities they represent.
Since he was hired as the Lions GM in 2021, Holmes has become the third black GM in the NFL history, after Ozzie Newsome and Jerry Reese, who both supported him along the way. Now, with six black GMs in the competition, including Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, Ryan Poles, Andrew Berry, Chris Grier and Terry Fontenot, Holmes has launched initiatives and recruitment efforts aimed at increasing black representation in NFL-Frontvang.
“They are so many paths that you can take, and it doesn’t just have to play or coach,” Holmes told ESPN. “… we need more black [team] Presidents. So, what can we do from our side to give others opportunities to become one [team] President? “
Holmes’ proven record as a GM made him a striking rent after his success with the Los Angeles Rams.
His success in Detroit follows his 18 seasons in the Front Office of the Rams, who rises in 2003 from a public relations trainee to director of College Scouting. There he played a key role in the preparation of Jared Goff, Aaron Donald and Cooper Kupp, Cornerstones of the Rams’ Super Bowl -performances in 2019 and 2022. Even in his first season with Detroit, Rams GM Les Snead has credited Holmes Wvi.
When building his Lions Front Office, Holmes gave priority to hiring black managers that he knew they were ready for larger roles. He selected former NFL player Ray Agnew as assistant GM after four years of working with Holmes as director of Pro Scouting of Rams. Holmes also created the Scouting Advancement department in 2021 and appointed Mike Martin to lead unity aimed at improved university and pro scouting.
Martin has since moved to become the general director of Notre Dame Football, which reflects the dedication of Holmes to develop black leaders outside the playing field and the coaching ranks.
“I just try to make sure that boys are able to succeed,” said Holmes, also quoting the Fritz Pollard Alliance for helping him and other minority candidates in coaching, Front Office and Scouting. “And look, they must be qualified. Black, white, brown, purple … Which color. They must be qualified and good anyway.”
Building on his estate, Holmes salaryChed de Wally Triplett Fellowship in the fall of 2024, a program that offers two students of minorities Hands-on experience in professional sports and front-office roles. Named after Lions Legend Wally Triplett, the first Afro-American to played in the NFL in 1949, the Fellowship contains four rotations of six months in the entire organization.
Current fellows Alexis Williams (Notre Dame) and Myles Gresham (Saginaw Valley State) are in their second year and gain experience in marketing, stadium events, team activities, business partnerhoods and community relationships.
“Do all these rotations to give these experiences outside only coaching and scouting, so those were some things we wanted to do to ensure that we gave other children a chance,” said Holmes.
As a black GM that leads a team in a predominantly black city and competition, Holmes acknowledges that his influence goes beyond the Front Office. Many Lions players consider him a role model that strengthens the connection between the team and management, whereby mutual respect is built up throughout the organization.
“You look at an NFL selection and the majority of it is Afro -American players,” said Holmes. “So, just to be able to relate, make contact with them, to talk to them … And I just think it’s good to see for younger generations. So, just as I was looking for an Ozzie Newsome and a Jerry Reese and Rick Smith, I can hopefully be the same model for that younger generation.”
