Stunning change – proposes Premier League who move in a very different direction

Three more games to go in this last round of Premier League matches.

Villa v Fulham and Newcastle against Arsenal today, then Everton v West Ham on Monday evening.

After just over six weeks of the Premier League season, these are 60 games that will be played by that time.

So what did we learn?

I want to concentrate on how many matches each of the Premier League teams have won this season so far.

First of all, here is a look at the past seasons, these are the Premier League clubs that won six or more in six PL competitions from their opening.

2024/25

Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Villa

2023/24

Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Villa Brighton, Tottenham

2022/23

Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Villa, Chelsea

2021/22

Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Man U, Everton, Brighton

So six Premier League teams won four or more of their first half dozen PL competitions in 2021/22, then five teams did it in 2022/23, six in 2023/24 and five in 2024/25.

So what about this season, Premier League teams win competitions in 2025/26?

As you can see, if Arsenal does not win this afternoon in St James’ Park, only Liverpool has won more than half of their six opening Premier League matches.

How angry is that?

When you compare it to what is the case in previous seasons, we got used to a number of teams that were dominant the rest.

Even more bizarre is that it could not have and should have won more than three of their opening at all at all, if you take into account the outrageous happiness that Liverpool has enjoyed, until yesterday in Palace….

Late, sometimes very late, winners for Liverpool against Bournemouth, Newcastle, Burnley and Arsenal, while eventually continuing to win against Everton.

It is not only the results for the Premier League teams this season, looking at the matches, I have rarely seen games where I thought this seems easy for every team in a competition.

Personally, I don’t think one of the current 20 teams is that everything is. I think there are many good teams, some very good, but we have nothing close to the very best Premier League teams from the past that were absolutely levels above all/almost the rest. Like man City when you were on their most dominant under Pep, where you were surprised if they were playing a game, let alone lost.

So why the change? What do these opening rounds of competitions tell us?

We have just seen a transfer window that has taken all previous records.

Liverpool’s will have issued a crazy amount, but it is the Premier League clubs as a whole where the real story is, I think.

Due to the financial dominance of the Premier League, we saw the 20 Premier League clubs more on new signing sessions than all combined 76 clubs in the Bundesliga, Ligue 1, La Liga and Serie A.

With a new rise in the TV money that is now starting this season, mainly because of overseas deals that continue to rise, this means that all 20 Premier League clubs have enormous amounts of money to spend. So they can go shopping on the continent and take away so many of the best players of this competition, as well as many other very good ones.

The gap between the elite and the rest has fallen seriously.

Well -run ‘smaller’ clubs with talented managers can get results against everyone on their day, for example, look at Bournemouth. They get crowds of 11,000 and are still competitive on and next to the field.

At the end of this season, the Premier League club that will be the least amount of the 20 teams from the TV deals will get more cash than anything but a handful of their domestic TV deals.

If you then take into account that the better -performing Premier League teams have European competitions to contend, which also helps things to become even more competitive when those parties play midweek and then have less preparation and rest time compared to those who are not in European competition.

The Premier League experiences a stunning change and nobody saw it coming.
