ATP Finals 2025 – Alcaraz puts on a show in Turin to take on Fritz
Sixth seed Fritz will find it difficult to be defeated after winning the opening set. His serving stats were strong, with a first-serve percentage of 75 percent, and although the American star saved eight break points, an opposing break per game proved to be the big blow.
There was only so much he could do against Alcaraz, who joins his compatriot to become the third-fastest man to reach 50 ATP top 10 victories in his career. Rafael Nadal in 73 games.
Since Fritz’s first service game lasted nine minutes, he was less lucky the next time when Alcaraz broke early for 2-1. The American star responded with a series of breaks, allowing him to predict the world No. 1’s moves at key points and challenge him.
A crushing backhand winner at the net for Fritz gave him a mini-break in the tiebreak as Alcaraz’s frustration was as evident in his mannerisms as it was in the craft of his coaches. Fritz broke the Spaniard again and delivered a devastating ace to take the opening set.
Nothing could separate the two men, and such was the pressure in the Inalpi Arena. Alcaraz celebrated holding the 3-2 as if he had won the match. The top seed finally broke through at 6-5, when he broke Fritz to force a decider.
It wasn’t until the sixth game that Alcaraz took control of the final set, his backhand attack into the back court enough to break Fritz for the third time in the match. With just 7 percent more points gained on his serve, the Spaniard had enough of an advantage to swing the momentum his way and towards victory.
