Red Bull continues to add new parts to its car to maintain Max Verstappen’s recent momentum in the battle for the Drivers’ Championship at the Mexico City Grand Prix.
Verstappen has deducted 64 points from Oscar Piastri’s championship lead in the past four races since Red Bull introduced a floor update at Monza. There’s another floor body upgrade at Mexico City – a track where teams regularly focus on cooling requirements due to the altitude – which goes hand in hand with redistributed exit areas at the top of the body for greater reliability.
“From the previous floor specification, a new top surface to the rear of the outer floor fence plus sidepod split line is offered, the latter to accommodate the sidepod overhaul,” Red Bull explains. “These provide the cooling benefit mentioned above, a small increase in load.”
In addition to enlarged brake ducts for cooling reasons, the new floor also sees an update to the floor edge, which Red Bull describes as a subtle revision that “removes a little more load while maintaining flow stability.”
Ferrari’s two areas of development are both focused on reliability, with new exhaust louvers in the bodywork and larger brake ducts at the rear for cooling, while Alpine, Williams, Racing Bulls and Sauber all also have additional louvers or bodywork outlets for the same purpose.
Ferrari’s update notes that the changes come at the expense of the car’s efficiency, with the less dense air at more than 2,000 meters above sea level requiring greater volumes through the car to keep the brakes and drive units cool.
McLaren, Mercedes, Aston Martin and Haas have not submitted any new components for this weekend’s race.
