Sunil Gavaskar shares insight on the takeaway from South Africa’s loss after India’s Super 8 success over Zimbabwe
Legendary opening line Sunil Gavaskar was quick to point out that India’s dominant performance was a direct result of the psychological shock the Proteas received. Speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar noted that the 76-run loss to South Africa acted as a catalyst for much-needed change.
“The margin of loss would have been a wake-up call for them, and I think they took that shock in a positive wayGavaskar noted.
One of the most talked about tactical shifts was the inclusion of Sanju Samson at the top of the order to provide a right-left opening combination Abhishek Sharma. Gavaskar praised the move and specifically highlighted Samson’s selfless approach. Although Samson fell for 24 off 15 balls, his intention set the tone for a mammoth total.
“It helped that Sanju Samson was at the top. He gave the team a flying start, exactly what was needed” added Gavaskar, noting that the momentum remained intact even after an early wicket fell.

A record-breaking evening in Chepauk for India against Zimbabwe
The Indian batting unit functioned like a well-oiled machine and posted a staggering 256/4, the second highest total in the history of the T20 World Cup. What made the achievement remarkable was the collective effort; for the first time, India crossed the 250 mark without an individual century. Abhishek rediscovered his touch with a fluent 55, while Hardik Pandya (50* of 23) and Tilak Varma (44* out of 16) ensured a thunderous ending.

Despite the clinical victory, Gavaskar issued a stern warning about the upcoming clash against West Indies on Sunday. Characterizing it as a “very different game”, he stressed that India cannot afford to take anything for granted as they head to what is essentially a virtual quarter-final.
