SHAMAM GASANOV has had the sting of defeat for more than a year, and now the Dagestani Destroyer finally has his chance of redemption. The burning desire of the featherweight contender for revenge against Garry Tonon has fueled every training session since their first meeting ended in the heartache.
The 29-year-old Gasanov is opposed to Tonon One Fight Night 34: Eersel vs. Jarvis On Friday, August 1 in Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand. Currently in third place in the Vederweight MMA division, Gasanov enters the CO-Main event and drives on a four-party series.
The bad blood speaks back to One Fight Night 12 in July 2023, where the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legend Tonon crushed the undefeated line of Gasanov with a second round bruising input. Since then, that painful memory has chased “The Cobra” and transforms him into a man who owned the score. In the meantime, the loss marked the first blemish on his professional MMA record.
Gasanov then restructured his entire approach for this meeting with high deployment. The Peresvet Fight Team product refuses to repeat the defensive mistakes that cost him their first meeting. His training camp has reflected this new philosophy because he has doubled his grip preparation.
However, Gasanov believes that the reputation of his opponent can be exaggerated further than struggling. He acknowledges the threat of Tonon’s entry game and has made considerable adjustments accordingly.
“After I had lost the first time against Tonon, I always wanted to come back as soon as possible to get another fight with Garry,” he said.
“Despite losing, frankly, apart from his struggling, he showed nothing else in that fight,” he said.
