Can Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers map a new course in NHL -Contractoring? Jason Gregor van Oilers Nation thinks so, and it is an idea that not many insiders have suggested while they try to predict the captain’s next extension period.
Gregor’s recent column Made a compelling pitch for McDavid and the organization to follow an unconventional approach to his next deal-on with an extension of a year at $ 14.6 million for the 2026-27 season. It is much less than most analysts assume that he is being paid, but Gregor explains his idea by claiming that McDavid will make so much or more in the long term.
The logic? Create extra dop space in the short term before the salary ceiling jumps to $ 113 million in 2027-28. This would give the oilers more flexibility to build a schedule of the championship caliber today and in 2026-27.
Why not a longer term for McDavid?
Instead of immediately signing a traditional four-year-old deal, McDavid could follow the one-year Pact with an extension of three years in January 2027 by around $ 17 million a year. For more than four years, that would maximize $ 16.4 million – in accordance with the current projections – in accordance with the CAP – Efficiency of Edmonton if every dollar matters.
The disadvantage here is of course that the oilers have no guarantee that McDavid will remain after the 2027-28 season. If things go sideways and the oilers seem less a competition, McDavid could theoretically shoot much earlier than the team would like.
Although such a movement is rare in the NHL, it is not forbidden under the current SMEs. It shows that McDavid is willing to first think of the team in the here and now, but is ready to sign the larger money agreement when the cap is higher and his percentage of that limit may be more in line with what it is really worth.
Gregor claims for both parties that it can be smart things.
Next: without trade, oilers can be forced to pay too much about Ekholm extension
