Abhishek Sharma’s breakthrough run in the current Asia Cup 2025 could soon open doors for ODI Cricket.
According to A Times of India report, the left-wing handhander has attracted the most important selector Ajit Agarkar and his team and from 19 October he can stand in line for an ODI debut in the Drie-Match series against Australia.
Abhishek has been the striking batter of India in the Asia Cup and scored 173 points in four games, the highest in the tournament so far. His success rate of 208.43 made him one of the most dangerous players at the top of the order.
What strengthens his case is his ability to switch on with the ball. Abhishek has six wickets of 12 T20i bowlingnings, including a few overs in the Asia Cup Group phase.
He also worked hard in the nets, which has often seen long spells. In fact, he recently appeared during an optional session as a Bowler to help good friend Shubman Gill to prepare for Spin.
With his all -round skills, Abhishek looks like a natural fit in the set of Gautam Gambhir. But his possible access to the ODI team has thrown the future of Rohit Sharma in the format a new spotlight.
India has 27 ODIs over for the World Cup 2027, and selectors have to decide whether they should continue to exist with the Gill-Rohit couple or promote the Gill-Abhishek partnership that is flourishing in T20is.
If Abhishek breaks into the XI, this can also influence the chances of Yashasvi Jaiswal. The young person made his ODI debut against England earlier this year, but missed the Asia Cup T20i team.
