Report: Maple Leafs suspend David Kampf without pay for refusing to report to AHL’s Toronto Marlies

The relationship between the Toronto Maple Leafs and David Kampf has slowly deteriorated over the past year and appears to have reached a boiling point.

Kampf didn’t make the Maple Leafs roster out of training camp, the first time he was left off an NHL opening night roster since 2017–18, and after being placed on waivers (and cleared), he was sent to the Toronto Marlies of the AHL. Kampf initially reported to the AHL, where he recorded one assist in four games for the Marlies, but has since left the team, clearly frustrated with the lack of opportunities in the NHL. According to PuckPedia, the Maple Leafs subsequently suspended him without pay for leaving the team.

David Kampf has been suspended without pay, according to league sources #LeafsForever for leaving their AHL team, which is why the Leafs are currently not paying the $1.25 million buried Cap Charge for him while he was in the minors. The expectation is that this will be resolved quickly (he reports back,

Early in Kampf’s tenure with the Maple Leafs, he established himself as somewhat of an unsung hero for the team at times. When he was paired up with players like Pierre Engvall and Ilya Mikheyev, they focused solely on eliminating their opponents. He never made much of an impact on the scoresheet, but under former head coach Sheldon Keefe he was a crucial penalty killer for the team and also contributed with a few goals every now and then.

When Craig Berube took over, it was clear that the same element of trust no longer existed between coach and player. Kampf was benched more often in 2024-25 and played in just one playoff game for the Maple Leafs last season. With the team revamping their bottom six with the likes of Nicolas Roy, Dakota Joshua, Scott Laughton and Steven Lorentz, the team’s need for Kampf’s style of play decreased, and so did his playing time.

As PuckPedia’s tweet indicates, this situation shouldn’t last much longer. Ultimately, Kampf still believes he is an NHL player, but his time with the Maple Leafs has clearly come to an end, and the team has no need for what he brings, especially the cap hit associated with him.
