The Special Olympics Community is deeply sad to learn from the death of fashion designer Giorgio Armani. He understood the important intersection of the fashion and sports worlds and used the power of his brand to argue for inclusion on behalf of the Special Olympics Movement.
“It was exciting to be introduced to the fashion world during the fashion week in Milan by the iconic Giorgio Armani. I appreciate the support he gave special Olympic Games over the years.”
Kester Edwards, Special Olympics Sports Manager and former Special Olympics Trinidad and Tobago Athlete.
During his 40-year association with Special Olympics, Armani designed uniforms for athletes who participated in world games and athletes on holiday cards. In 2004 he worked together with the famous photographer Annie Leibovitz to compile a photo album called Faces of Sport, in favor of Special Olympics. The book portrayed athletes at the top of their games. Special Olympic athletes could be seen alongside superstars such as Serena Williams, Pete Sampras and Ronaldo.
“Thank you, Giorgio Armani, for sharing our vision and for showing the world that there is nothing more fashionable than welcome and acceptance for everyone.”
Timothy Shriver, Special Olympics Board Chair
More recently, the Armani/Teatro organized a fundraising gala in Milan Prior to Special Olympics World Winter Games Turin 2025 with an auction that included an Armani Fall 2024 Black Multi-Laged Tulle Bustier Evening Dress.
We send our deepest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Giorgio Armani.
