James Mirtle of the athletics It was recently asked whether rumors about Quinn Hughes who finished in New Jersey were based on any form of truth. As part of a recent Postbag post, Mirtle replied that they could be and that a move to New Jersey feels a natural fit for Hughes.
He writes: “With enormous questions about Elias Pettersson and Thatcher Demko, the ceiling feels too low to compete with the real contenders in the West.” He added: “If you are Hughes, indisputably now one of the best players in the competition and with two years on your deal, it naturally feels to ask you about your future if this Canucks team will not break through and win.”
Canucks president Jim Rutherford brought the Hughes-to-Jersey conversation a few months ago at a media conference. It was not provoked and surprising, but the comments brought Canucks fans in a bit of a downward play, many wondered why Rutherford would bring that scenario to the world. Was this something Hughes had suggested? Is it something that the Canucks are preparing for?
Nobody seemed to know, but it was too late. Rutherford had already hinted that Quinn might want to play with his brothers, Jack and Luke.
Quinn Hughes Trade Talk clearly does not go away
Speculation mounts around Quinn Hughes and his future. Vancouver ended 18th with 90 points last season, and uncertainty about Elias Pettersson and Thatcher Demko probably not to be struggling with the elite clubs of the West. With two years left on his contract, Hughes weighs – now one of the best defenders in the competition – his options such as the Canucks do not take a considerable step forward.
In the meantime, the Devils would undoubtedly like to add one of the best defenders of the NHL. And Mirtle claims that they have the cap space and flexibility to do this.
If Hughes wants to join his brothers, New Jersey could be the perfect landing site. By 2027–28, the Devils are expected to have around $ 62 million in cap -space, with large contracts going and important prospects such as Seamus Casey and Anton Silayev are ready to make an impact. Even a $ 15 million-plus deal for Hughes would be manageable in addition to cost-driven stars. And in every exchange with Vancouver there would be clear salary to go back the other way to give the canucks something that would help their schedule.
The defensive depth and future flexibility of the Devils make them well positioned to add Hughes. Mirtle writes: “I don’t really see the disadvantage to be honest; the devils are lucky that a multi-year Norris Trophy candidate probably has them at the top of his to-go list.”
