Swiss team provides unfortunate update on Kevin Fiala’s injury

Kevin Fiala’s injury update is not good. According to the Swiss Ice Hockey PR account and their official team website”Kevin Fiala was injured in the second group match against Canada and will have to miss the rest of the Olympic tournament.”

Fiala was on the ice with a serious injury late in the third period of Switzerland’s loss to Team Canada. The score was 5-1 with less than three minutes left in the 3rd. Fiala became entangled with Tom Wilson, who, while trying to slow down from a hit, both fell in an action that was not at all malicious. Fiala went for a reverse hit when he saw Wilson coming. Both lost their balance when Wilson tried to avoid the hit and fell.

Fiala’s leg bent under Wilson and he was unable to leave the ice on his own. A stretcher was brought out to help Fiala off the rink.

“It’s the Olympics and I hate that he might not be able to keep playing,” Wilson said. “I’m just sending the best to his family and him. You never want to see anyone go down, especially in a tournament like this. It’s bad for the country, for their team. I just wish him a quick recovery.”

Swiss coach Patrick Fischer said after the match: “We haven’t seen him yet. I think he has gone to hospital. Obviously it doesn’t look so good. Difficult, tough, difficult moment for Kevin and the whole team, obviously.” The update that came back afterward was that Fiala was done and will not return in any further Olympic competition. Whether he can play games for the Kings coming out of the Olympic break remains to be seen.

Fiala’s injury was not the only one for Team Switzerland. Andrea Glauser left the match with a concussion after taking a heavy blow from Canadian Connor McDavid.
