Alexei Pofyrin won the battle for former champions to continue to the fourth round of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Toronto.

Defending champion Pofyrin fought back after losing the first set to beat the 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev 5-7 6-4 6-4 on Friday morning (local time) in two and a half hours.

Despite the first shortage, Pofyrin seemed to control. The Australian No. 2 claimed an early break after a shaky start of the No. 10 seeds, which had nine casual mistakes and three double errors in the first four games.

However, Medvedev would only cough up three casual mistakes to win the opening set in 56 minutes.

Opening game Breaks in the last two sets helped to set the tone for Popyrin, because the scoreboard print demanded its toll on the world no. 14. In combination with his big service game and dominance on the net, the 25-year-old Medvedev overcame to extend his winning series to the Canadian open to eight matches.

It was an excellent victory for the Australian against the former world no. 1 in the run -up to the US Open later this month.

The victory of Popyrin is making a collision of the fourth round with No. 5 Seed Holger Rune after the Dane Voorde by the Frenchman Alexandre Muller previously beat on Thursday.

The New South Welshman is one of the three Australians who are still alive in Toronto, where Alex de Minaur joined Popyrin in the last 16 after Countryman Chris O’Connell-being a planned opponent of the third round with an injury withdrew.

Aleksandar Vukic will face the American Frances Tiafoe on Friday in a rematch of their meeting in 2024 in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The Australian defeated Tiafoe 6-2 7-6 (11) to reach his second career ATP semi-final.
