The last two times the lush green Cubbon Park welcomed the Davis Cup, the draw ceremony took place at the majestic Vidhana Soudha, the iconic seat of the Karnataka State Legislature.

When the draw for India’s first round qualifier against the Netherlands took place on Friday, it took place in a modest but neat makeshift structure within the SM Krishna Tennis Stadium complex.

It was perhaps the appropriate lead-up to Saturday’s action. The Dutch are not known to be great admirers of flamboyance, as their society swears by the mantra Act Normal (just be normal). India are also entering the match cautiously and are waiting with bated breath to see how frontline singles player Sumit Nagal holds up after three weeks of injury rehabilitation.

At stake is a place in September’s second qualifying round, the final stage before the season-ending eight-team Davis Cup final. On paper, the visitors are better, even without world champion number 29 Tallon Greek Spoor and number 67 Botic van de Zandschulp, both of whom are competing in the ATP Rotterdam 500.

The Netherlands, runners-up in the 2024 Davis Cup, are sixth in the world, while India are 33rd. The top two Dutch singles here, Jesper de Jong and Guy Den Ouden, rank 88 and 162 respectively, compared to Nagal’s 281 and Dhakshineswar Suresh’s 465.

But the charm of the Davis Cup is that pedigree and status have limited validity. India’s own 3-1 win against Switzerland last year is proof of that, as the lanky Dhakshineswar defeated a player more than 280 places above him.

Additionally, Nagal had a career-high 68 in mid-2024 and has a good grasp of the fast-paced, high-altitude conditions in Garden City.

Interestingly, the 28-year-old has never played the opening match in his eight cup games. A win against Den Ouden in the first rubber on Saturday could decide the tie for India.

For Sunday’s doubles match, captain Rohit Rajpal, citing better preparation, has chosen Sriram Balaji instead of Rithvik Bollipalli to partner world number 20 Yuki Bhambri.

But India has lost the doubles point in all three of its recent outings against European opposition – against Switzerland, Sweden and Denmark. A break in the series will come at the right time.

Order of play:

On Saturday (the game starts at 4:00 PM): Sumit Nagal vs. Guy Den Ouden; Dhakshineswar Suresh vs. Jesper de Jong

On Sunday (game starts at 2 p.m.): Yuki Bhambri & Sriram Balaji vs. Sander Arends & David Pel; Nagal versus de Jong; Dhakshineswar vs Den Ouden
