GENEVA, NY – The Plattsburgh State Cardinals continued SUNYAC play Saturday night, defeating the William Smith Herons 2-1 in a closely contested battle.

William Smith struck first in the opening period when Finley Crosby scored an unassisted goal at 12:12 of the first, giving the Herons an early 1-0 lead. However, Plattsburgh State responded quickly in the second stanza.

Only 1:15 into the second period, freshman year Bailey Mackellar(Hamburg, NY) tied the game with a finish on a play set up by seniors Emily Kasprzak (Niagara, NY) and Taya Balfour(Moorestown, NJ). Later in the period at 12:26, ​​freshman Zoe Pug(West Palm Beach, Fla.) scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal, thanks to assists from a sophomore Seoyoung Yoo (Yongin, Republic of Korea) and MacKellar to put the Cardinals ahead for good.

Plattsburgh’s defense tightened in the third period, maintaining the one-goal margin. Junior Chloe Lewis (Monson, Mass.) earned the win in goal, making 22 saves on the night, while William Smith’s Mia Iwicki had 29 shots in the loss.

The win extends Plattsburgh State’s strong run in SUNYAC play and continues the momentum following back-to-back overtime wins this week over Middlebury and Buffalo State. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 15-6 overall and 9-1 in conference action.

Earlier this season, Plattsburgh defeated William Smith 4-0 in the previous meeting at home to complete the sweep of the season series. Plattsburgh State returns home Friday to host Oswego in its next SUNYAC showdown.
