Pug’s OT Power-Play winner lifts Cardinals past Buffalo State in Women’s Hockey

BUFFALO, NY — The Plattsburgh State women’s ice hockey team returned to SUNYAC road action Friday night, earning a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Buffalo State. The Cardinals continued their strong run, winning their ninth game in the last 10 after earning a thrilling come-from-behind overtime victory against No. 4 Middlebury earlier this week.

Plattsburgh got on the board first in the opening period as a sophomore Seoyoung Yoo (Yongin, Republic of Korea) capitalized on senior’s assist at 13:26 of the first Taya Balfour(Moorestown, NJ), giving the Cardinals an early 1-0 lead. The Bengals answered early in the second period with a power-play goal from Sequoia Recollet-Nebenionquit, tying the game at 1-1 and setting the stage for a thrilling finish.

The starting signal came in overtime as a freshman Zoe Pug (West Palm Beach, Florida) buried a power play winner at 2:26 of the extra session on a feed from senior Emily Kasprzak (Niagara, NY), sending Plattsburgh State home with SUNYAC’s win.

Second goalkeeper Maddy Stetson (Wasilla, Alaska) made 23 saves in net, putting aside numerous Buffalo State chances in regulation time before the clincher in the extra session. The victory marked the second meeting between the two sides this season, with Plattsburgh having recorded a 1-0 victory in their previous match.

With the win, the Cardinals improve to 14-6 overall and 8-1 in SUNYAC play.

PLATTSBURGH, NY – The Plattsburgh State men’s ice hockey team returned home Friday night and continued its SUNYAC momentum with a 3-0 victory over Buffalo State at Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. The Cardinals built on a recent two-game win streak that included wins over Cortland and Morrisville.

Plattsburgh opened the scoring in the first period as a freshman Félix-Antoine Parenteau (St-Augustin-de-Desmaures, Quebec) struck at 14:38 on the power play, assisted by sophomore Quinn Tavares (Mississauga, Ontario) and seniors Lonan Bulger(Yellowknife, Northwest Territories), to give the Cardinals an early 1-0 lead. Just over two minutes later, junior Patrick Kool (Lancaster, NY) extended its lead with a goal at 4:30, giving Plattsburgh State a 2-0 lead heading into the second period.

Late in the third, senior Riley Sutherland (Burlington, Ontario) closed the scoring with a goal at 15:48, creating a 3-0 lead and sealing the victory for the Cardinals. Aaron Catron (Midtown, Del.) and Jaden district (East Aurora, NY) assisted on the third goal and helped Plattsburgh increase the lead in front of a packed home crowd.

In net, freshman goaltender Beau Lane (Pembroke, Mass.) turned away 32 shots to earn the shutout, making several key stops in the second period to preserve the Cardinals’ lead.

In their previous meeting earlier this season, the Cardinals earned a thrilling 4-3 victory over Buffalo State. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 11-10 overall and 7-7 in SUNYAC play.
