Piers Morgan defends Aryna Sabalenka over ‘transphobic’ accusations

Piers Morgan publicly defended Aryna Sabalenka after the four-time Grand Slam champion admitted on his show that she was against transgender athletes competing in women’s sports.

This week, Morgan hosted Sabalenka and Nick Kyrgios on his Uncensored show. The main purpose of the show was to promote their upcoming Battle of the Sexes competition, which will take place on December 28 in Dubai. As it will be a match pitting an ATP player against a female player, the British presenter took the opportunity to ask the Belarusian how she would feel about the prospect of competing against a transgender athlete on the WTA Tour.

When answering the question, Sabalenka said it would be “unfair” because that would mean playing against “a biological male.”

“That’s a tough question. I have nothing to say against them. But I feel like they still have a huge advantage over the women and I think it’s not fair to women to basically face biological men. It’s not fair. The woman has worked all her life to reach her limit and then she has to face a man who is biologically much stronger, so for me I don’t agree with this kind of thing in the sport,” the WTA world number 1 said during the show.

Sabalenka’s comments about transgender athletes drew criticism and scrutiny from Belarus, with some accusing her of being “transphobic.”

“She is 100 percent right in what she told me… but is already being attacked by the LGBTQ+ lobby for being ‘transphobic’. It’s not transphobic to want to protect women’s rights,” Morgan wrote on X.

Under the WTA’s gender policy, to be eligible to compete on the Tour, a player must be declared female for four years, have reduced testosterone levels and agree to regular testing procedures.
