  • The Piotto Vogts have completed the Rally dos Sertões several times.
  • This event covers almost 3,200 kilometers of Brazilian wilderness.
  • The 911 Dakar was the first Porsche to ever participate in this treacherous event.

When Porsche first announced the 911 Dakar, most assumed the car would end up in the hands of those who would likely never get their expensive rides dirty. Even if the car is literal named after a legendary off-road rally.

However, not every 911 Dakar buyer is satisfied with their local cars and coffee. For example, the Piotto Vogt family from Brazil has just completed the incredibly difficult Rally dos Sertões with their 911 Dakar. This is the first time a Porsche has ever taken part in the long-term off-road adventure.

The rally was first launched in 1993. It is considered one of the toughest events in South America, typically completed on motorcycles, side-by-sides and quads. Susele and her husband, Fredy, have competed in side-by-side events in the past. This time they thought the 911 Dakar would be the perfect vehicle for the race.

To complete the rally, the Piotto Vogts (along with their son João Pedro) covered almost 2,100 miles from start to finish. That’s just the rally course; However, the total trip involved a long drive to and from the race. All in all, the family clocked up more than 7,600 kilometers of the Dakar in the course of two weeks.

There was also a support SUV in tow, but the rally continued in this off-the-shelf 911. The family slept in the roof tent, crossed water crossings and really put the car to the test.

Engine1 takes: It’s always fun to see a purpose-built vehicle being used as intended. But if that vehicle is a rally-ready 911, so much the better. All too often, these types of cars end up in locked garages where not a single tire is rotated out of anger.

The Piotto Vogt family understands why a car like the 911 Dakar exists, and we raise a glass to them for meeting this incredible challenge.
