A whimsical ‘witch’s house’, complete with its own dungeon, peepholes and mini fairy doors, is perhaps Perth’s quirkiest housing offering.

There is also strong interest in it and it has become the most viewed property listing on realestate.com.au this week.

Inspired by The Witch’s House in Beverly Hills, 77 Shady Hills View, Bullsbrook, is an enchanting six-bedroom, four-bathroom owner-built home that has been a twelve-year labor of love for sellers Meg Howe and Graeme Young.

Ms Howe said the story of their off-grid retreat began when they lived in a straw bale shed on the 2.04 hectare property.

Knowing that a barn couldn’t be their forever home, Mrs. Howe did some research and was struck by the beauty of California’s Witches House – also known as Spadena House – which appeared in films such as Clueless and Hansel & Gretel.

So she asked Mr. Young to build a similar house.

“I had no idea how much it would cost and how complicated it was and all the problems and stuff like that,” she said.

“Would we do it again? Probably not, but we were just crazy and young enough to say, ‘Why not? Let’s just do it.'”

Although they had never visited the real Spadena House, they contacted the real estate agent owner.

“He knows us. We call ourselves ‘The Witch’s House Down Under’,” Ms Howe said.

The magical home’s fairytale charm is accentuated by an array of handcrafted finishes and features, intrinsic woodwork, stained glass antiques and other relics imported from as far away as Egypt and America.

An American school bell from the 19th century, in the middle of a bat nest (when you ring it, the bats fly out), and an ammonite fossil embedded in the wall from Madagascar are examples.

The kitchen’s stained glass with planets was inspired by Gaudi House of Bones in Barcelona, and Mr. Young and Mrs. Howe found a local artist to create their own interpretation with planets.

“Everything has a story, I guess,” Mrs. Howe said.

The couple have decided to put their beloved home up for sale as part of their retirement plans, saying what they will miss most is the lushness and serenity of the property.

In keeping with the couple’s love of permaculture, the property’s grounds include an array of produce such as organic mulberries, fig trees, pomegranates, quinces and avocado trees.

There is also a workshop measuring 16 by 10 meters, as well as a second workshop that can be used as storage or studio space.

Selling agent Kim Johnson of HKY Bullsbrook said the opportunity to sell the house was phenomenal, and while it was “certainly not for everyone”, it had plenty of options.

“If you take away all the mystical things about it, it’s mainly because of the permaculture and the lay of the land; it would be suitable as a yoga clinic, a wellness center and even gardening,” she said.

The house is being sold through a Set Date Sale campaign, with all offers presented before November 18.
