The Boston Celtics officially welcomed the new majority owner Bill Chisholm on Thursday, indicating the start of a new era for the historic franchise. During his introductory press conference, Chisholm promised to build on the recent success of the team while maintaining his championship ambitions.
“Whatever it is needed”
Chisholm, a native and lifelong Celtics fan of Massachusetts, made it clear that his vision is focusing on winning titles.
“Let’s do what we can do to win championships and raise banners, and feed on it as much as possible as we can,” he said. “I will do what is needed, whatever the Boston Celtics need to do.”
Chisholm leads the group that the Celtics bought for at least $ 6.1 billion, the highest price ever paid for an American professional sports franchise. The NBA unanimously approved the sale last month.
Continuity in leadership
Although ownership changes often bring uncertainty, Boston expects a smooth transition. Former main owner WYC Grousbeck remains as CEO for five years and serves as an alternative governor. Grousbeck, who bought the team in 2002 with Steve Pagliuca, led the Celtics to two championships, including their title of 2024 led by Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
“I stay in, shoulder to shoulder with Bill,” said Grousbeck. “I want a third ring. And then I want a fourth ring. I have two, it’s a nice start.”
More than half of the old property group will also remain involved, in addition to President Rich Gotham, president of basketball operations Brad Stevens and head coach Joe Mazzulla.
Balance success and flexibility
Chisholm inherits a schedule in transition. Tatum is recovering from Achilles surgery, and the Celtics exchanged Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis this summer to prevent limiting fines in the second apron. Stevens emphasized flexibility as a key to schedule structure.
“You have to give yourself the flexibility and the opportunity to jump to the right deals,” said Stevens.
Chisholm repeated that philosophy and stated: “The flexibility that Brad is talking about, I think that is of the utmost importance. But in the end we will do everything we can to win. It is task no. 1.”
Wider vision
Chisholm also expressed support for bringing a WNBA team to Boston and praised the shared area of TD Garden with the Bruins. In addition to co-owner Aditya Mittal, he outlined a long-term obligation to strengthen the Celtics both on and outside the field.
