Adam Silver sketched daring international vision for the NBA

The NBA has long embraced the worldwide expansion, but Commissioner Adam Silver now indicates an even more ambitious future. Speaking at the Bloomberg Philanthropies Global Forum, Silver revealed that the competition is investigating the launch of a European competition in 2027 or 2028, one that could eventually see his teams towards NBA franchises in the official competition.

NBA Cup and Play -Ooff Integration

Silver pointed to the NBA Cup, the mid -season tournament of the competition, as a natural first step for the integration of international competition.
“We have something that we call the NBA Cup, a tournament in the middle season,” Silver said. “You could imagine that teams from Europe, potential Africa, who participated in that tournament. You could see that teams come in our play -offs, top seeds from other competitions.”

The Commissioner suggested that European clubs could eventually be confronted with NBA teams in meaningful games that go beyond exhibitions. That would be a radical shift for the competition, which so far has only conducted worldwide games exhibitions in international markets.

European clubs and growing interest

Reports this summer indicated that Silver met Real Madrid about the possibility of becoming a member of the proposed European League. The iconic football and basketball club has already expanded its American presence and agrees to organize an NFL game this year. For the NBA, adding respected international teams can immediately offer the project credibility.

The move would also reflect the explosive growth of basketball throughout Europe. The continent has yielded a wave of Elite NBA talent, from Giannis Antetokounmpo to Luka Dončić, making European markets more attractive than ever.

Travel and logistics

Silver believes that travel no longer presents a big obstacle. “When I think of the flight from New York to LA, for example, there is no reason if we had 14 teams in Europe, you couldn’t travel, play the Knicks of Nets, travel to London, play three or four times in Europe, come home,” he said. “I think it is very executable in our competition.”

Nationalist flair

The competition is also considering an All-Star Game format inspired by the Face-Off of the NHL’s 4 Nations. Silver excluded a simple USA versus World -Matchup, but suggested that regional teams could present the diversity of the competition.

With 30% of his players now internationally, the NBA seems determined to reflect his global makeup, not only in grilles, but also in the competition itself.
