A delegation of the All-India Nabard Employees Association called on Shaji KV, Chairman, Nabard, at his office in Mumbai on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, to discuss a charter of employee demands.
A delegation from AINBEA had summoned Shaji KV, chairman of Nabard, to his office in Mumbai to apprise him of the need to intervene on a host of issues, including suicides due to what she described as a threat from greedy private sector MFIs.
Household debts
The association also noted poverty among the poor (particularly women, given mounting household debt that stood at 42 percent of GDP, according to the RBI); flow of concessional funds from RBI to Nabard under Nabard Act, 1981 (section 42/43) and RBI Act, 1934 (section 46A); and approval of the ninth bipartite wage scheme by the Ministry of Financial Services, Government of India.
Avoidable suffering
Rana Mitra, Secretary General of AINBEA, said the Nabard chairman also reflected on avoidable problems among the indebted poor due to high interest rates charged by private MFIs. In this context, he also agreed with AINBEA that the flow of concessional funds from RBI to Nabard is a sine qua non when it comes to ensuring the well-being of the poor.
These funds will go a long way in improving the performance of Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) and cooperatives and direct the flow of low interest funds to them through Nabard refinancing. This, in turn, will enable RRBs and cooperatives to provide cheap credit to poor borrowers, including self-help groups (SHGs).
Gate meeting
The AINBEA organized a gate meeting at the Nabard headquarters in Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai, in support of its demands, including the scrapping of four new labor laws, which it said are clearly anti-labor laws.
